Football returns this Sat 6th June 10am
Paul is Retiring at the end of Term
I’m retiring from football coaching at the end of this term, 11th July 2026. I will be handing over the soccer school to Debbie and James. On the 4th of July, 10.00 – 11,20, I am inviting all players and coaches I have taught over the years to St Christopher's School for a small reunion. I would love to see coaches who have worked for Grassroots and players who have been to either our Saturday mornings or holiday camps. Also, anyone who has been coached by me, whether at Letchworth Leisure Centre, Fearnhill, Westmill, Ickleford, Stotfold, or any of the representative teams I've taught over a 45-year period.
My journey in football coaching began when I was just 16 years old. At the time, I was fortunate enough to be one of the first young coaches selected to take part in an FA coaching qualification pilot scheme, an opportunity that would shape the rest of my life.
My first coaching roles were at the local leisure centre and Fearnhill School in Letchworth. What started as just one class quickly grew into twelve weekly sessions, something I was incredibly proud to build through hard work, passion, and the support of so many young players and families.
Alongside this, I coached youth teams at Westmill, Ickleford, and Stotfold, experiences that opened further opportunities to work with County and League representative teams. These years helped me grow not only as a coach, but as a person, and gave me unforgettable memories and friendships.
One of the greatest adventures of my life came when I spent a year travelling around North America, coaching football in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, and Buffalo. It was an amazing experience to share the game I loved with players from different backgrounds and cultures.
Twenty-seven years ago, Grassroots Soccer began at St Christopher School. The opportunity came about after I had been teaching border basketball and Football. When those sessions ended, a parent approached me and asked whether I would consider running football sessions independently. I said yes — and 27 years later, here we are.
Grassroots Soccer became something very special. From the very beginning, the ethos was simple: to provide fun, safe, and enjoyable sessions where young people could develop both on and off the pitch. I truly believe we achieved that year after year.
One of the greatest rewards has been watching players grow into confident footballers, but even more importantly, into respectful, kind, and well-rounded individuals. Seeing so many young people develop confidence, friendships, resilience, and character through football has meant everything to me.
I have massively enjoyed every moment of my coaching journey and feel incredibly grateful to everyone who has been part of it, players, parents, coaches, schools, and friends. Thank you for your support, trust, and memories over the years.
Football has given me a lifetime of joy, and Grassroots Soccer will always hold a very special place in my heart. The coaching school will be led by Debbie and James. Both have been very loyal and helped set the very high standards Grassroots is known for, and I’m confident that they will continue to grow the coaching school.
